Support for the refurbishing of the oldest Wind Farm in Costa da Morte.
PEMALSA, a subsidiary of Grupo Elecnor, owns Malpica’s Wind Farm, located in the municipal area of Bergantiños and Pontesco (A Coruña). The company wanted to refurbish the facilities after more than 20 years making use of the Galician wind.
A sustainable challenge.
How to replace 67 wind turbines from a Wind Farm with 7 new ones without using dumpsters or damaging the area?
A circular solution.
SURUS developed a circular solution, an innovation in this industry, which guaranteed the reemployment of all wind turbines and transformation centers in secondary markets. Additionally, we ensured a proper dismantling process and a controlled demolition of the remaining structures with no damage to the area.
Process
1. The same purpose, a different place.
Despite operating for 20 years, the 69 wind turbines and 15 transformation centers were in perfect condition for reemployment. SURUS managed the sale in secondary markets so other economies such as India or Cuba could make use of this technology at a lower price, preventing the use of natural resources for manufacturing and recapturing value for the farm.
– Documenting and taking pictures.
– Coordinating visits of potential buyers and interested people.
– Marketing and advertisement, with international focus.
– Follow-up on buyer’s payments.
– Delivery coordination for buyers.
2. Dismantling giants:
Once all equipment was sold, the hardest task was to dismantling the huge structures. We coordinated every group of technicians in order to ensure the integrity of the wind turbines (blades, nacelle, tower and switchboards) as well as the landscape.
3. Recovering green areas
Finally, we managed a safe demolition of the foundations, which were no longer supporting the wind turbines. We applied an environmental solution by refilling the area with soil and hydroseeding the area to boost plant life.
Results
100% of equipment reemployed in secondary markets (90% international companies).
0% generated waste:
– 2070 tons of iron and steel recovered
– 5000 kg of plastic recovered
– 475 tons of hazardous oil recovered
– 62100 kg of fiberglass waste
+1,4 M of economic returns 4 times over the price as scrap.
