DISMANTLING / Construction
Recovering public area and income for Valencia.
Valencia’s City Council, once the agreement to host the Formula 1 Grand Prix was over, wanted to fully dismantle all garages located in two protected buildings in order to recover public areas.
SURUS challenge
How to dismantle part of a Grand Prix in order to recover public areas without generating waste that would harm the treasury and the environment in the city?
A circular solution.
SURUS developed a sustainable and innovative solution, aligned with the guidelines approved in Europe in terms of circular economy. We integrated the facility dismantling process with the reemployment of generated assets to prevent training them as waste.
Process
1. Manual and selective garage dismantling.
In order to reemploy as much equipment as possible from stalls number 4 and 5 of Valencia’s harbor, we executed a manual dismantling piece by piece. We wanted to classify each type of assets and material located in the old pit stops:
- Office doors
- Emergency doors
- Automated access doors
- Light fixtures
- Showers, screens, toilets and bathrooms
- Inside fire hose reels.
- Alarm and fire sensors.
- Industrial spotlights.
- Huge windows.
- Switchboards
- Wooden and special floors
We developed a circular dismantling model in order to decrease vibrations and dust generation, preventing damage to the Mediterranean Sea, which was 15 meters away from the work area. We didn’t want to generate a permanent carbon footprint for the city.
Process
2. Maximizing reemployment, minimizing waste.
Once both stalls were dismantled, we sold the assets and equipment in secondary markets. Additionally, we generated only 60% of the waste that would have been generated through traditional dismantling.
We managed to reuse 100% of installed equipment: production equipment, climate control equipment, lighting, electrical equipment, power equipment, surveillance systems, firefighting systems.
Results.
60% of the waste generated compared to traditional models
50% waste recovered and reused
100% reemployment for installed equipment:
Climate control, lights, surveillance, switchboards…
